About China Decoded
China Decoded is a mobile-first web app designed to help foreign tourists navigate Chinese cuisine with confidence. It provides bilingual dish information, audio pronunciation, allergen warnings, and cultural context — so you can order food safely and explore new flavors across China.
What Data We Collect
- Local preferences — Your allergen settings, dietary restrictions, favorite dishes, and language choice are stored in your browser's localStorage. This data never leaves your device.
- Submitted photos — If you use the Report feature to submit a menu photo, that image is stored in Cloudflare R2 cloud storage.
- No personal information — We do not collect names, email addresses, or any personally identifiable information. There are no user accounts and no tracking cookies (beyond those used by third-party ad services described below).
How We Use Data
- Preferences — Stored only on your device to personalize your experience (e.g., highlighting allergens, remembering your language).
- Submitted photos — Used to improve our dish database. Photos may be reviewed by AI systems and human editors to identify dishes and verify information.
- No data sales — We do not sell any data to third parties.
Third-Party Services
- Google AdSense — We display ads via Google AdSense, which may use cookies to serve personalized ads. You can learn more at Google's Privacy Policy.
- Cloudflare — Our site is hosted on Cloudflare Pages, and submitted photos are stored in Cloudflare R2. See Cloudflare's Privacy Policy.
- We do not use any analytics or tracking scripts beyond Google AdSense.
Data Retention

- Submitted photos — Retained indefinitely to help improve the service.
